Silver arrived in the 1960s. His job was to get scientists where they needed to go and back safely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Thriving with Pancreatic Cancer: Silver Darmer\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6fJBfvbjxCE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy only point of reference was usually the sun, and I thought it was a fantastic experience. I can\u2019t describe what it was like to see the glaciers up close,\u201d he said. \u201cI still don\u2019t wear a watch, because I can tell the time by the sun\u2019s position in the sky.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of Darmer\u2019s military career was spent on Earth\u2019s last continental frontier, and he is now navigating a new frontier. For the last seven years, the 79-year-old has been not only surviving but thriving with pancreatic cancer. He credits his participation in a clinical trial designed by researchers at the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthsciences.arizona.edu\/\"><b>University of Arizona Health Sciences<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy attitude was, I have a little problem and I have to stay ahead of it.
