For years, her son Jack battled a vicious cycle of respiratory issues while his sisters, Cameron and Peyton, faced other health issues. Jack was just 2 years old when he was diagnosed with reactive airway disorder, a condition that escalated into severe asthma. By the time he turned 5, Jack was trapped in a routine of dry coughs, difficulty breathing and emergency hospital visits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Raising triplets with chronic illnesses\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YfhStE21o70?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019d sit with him in the bathroom, steam filling the room, just hoping his breathing would ease up,\u201d Jamee said. \u201cWe\u2019d use a nebulizer every few hours, but nothing seemed to work for long. Eventually, we\u2019d rush him to the ER, where he\u2019d spend days recovering on oxygen and steroids, only for the cycle to start all over again a week later.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For eight long years, Jack endured the same painful pattern. Everything changed in 2013, when Jamee\u2019s father met\u00a0<\/span><b>Fayez K. Ghishan, MD<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the PANDA endowed director of the University of Arizona\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.arizona.edu\/pediatrics\/steele-childrens-research-center\"><b>Steele Children\u2019s Research Center<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and Alan and Janice Levin Family endowed professor and head of the Department of Pediatrics at the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.arizona.edu\/\"><b>U of A College of Medicine \u2013 Tucson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A few days later, Jamee found herself sitting across from Ghishan, who would alter the course of her son\u2019s life forever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe listened carefully, examined Jack and said, \u2018I think he has eosinophilic esophagitis, but I\u2019ll need to do an endoscopy to be sure,\u2019\u201d Jamee recalled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The diagnosis of eosinophilic esophagitis, an allergic condition that occurs when the esophagus becomes inflamed and does not contract properly, was confirmed. With a few simple dietary changes prescribed by Ghishan, Jack\u2019s unbreakable cycle of respiratory distress came to an end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jack\u2019s story is far from unique. Autoimmune diseases affect millions of people worldwide, and their prevalence is increasing. To help families like the Emenses, the Steele Children\u2019s Research Center and the U of A Health Sciences\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthsciences.arizona.edu\/centers-programs\/center-advanced-molecular-and-immunological-therapies\"><b>Center for Advanced Molecular and Immunological Therapies<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0are leading novel research to advance the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of autoimmune diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Understanding autoimmune diseases<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the United States alone, more than 40 million people suffer from over 100 different autoimmune diseases. These conditions occur when the body\u2019s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells, leading to inflammation and damage in various organs and tissues.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1955\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1955\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1955 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/annualreports.healthsciences.arizona.edu\/2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/2-Fayez-Ghishan_klh9678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/annualreports.healthsciences.arizona.edu\/2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/2-Fayez-Ghishan_klh9678.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/annualreports.healthsciences.arizona.edu\/2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/2-Fayez-Ghishan_klh9678-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/annualreports.healthsciences.arizona.edu\/2024\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/2-Fayez-Ghishan_klh9678-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1955\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fayez Ghishan, MD, is internationally recognized for his research into pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition. Photo by Kris Hanning, U of A Health Sciences Office of Communications<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are two types of inflammation: infectious, where you have bacteria or viruses causing an immune response, and sterile, where the immune system attacks the body\u2019s own tissues for no apparent reason. This latter type is what we see in autoimmune diseases,\u201d Ghishan said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autoimmune diseases vary widely in their effects. Rheumatoid arthritis causes joint pain; Crohn\u2019s disease and ulcerative colitis impact the digestive system; Conditions such as asthma and atopic dermatitis affect the lungs and skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAsthma, for example, is an autoimmune disease,\u201d Ghishan said. \u201cPeople don\u2019t often think of it that way, but it\u2019s the immune system that\u2019s causing the inflammation in the airways.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A key component in the development of autoimmune diseases is the interaction between genetics and environmental factors, also known as epigenetics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEpigenetics means environmental factors drive changes in the function of the gene rather than the structure of the gene,\u201d Ghishan explained. \u201cThe genes are the genes. They are not changing. You have 23,000 genes in your body, and they are stable; however, their function can be changed by the environment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, the Steele Children\u2019s Research Center became the first academic entity in Arizona to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthsciences.arizona.edu\/news\/releases\/researchers-gain-new-tool-study-rare-childhood-diseases\"><b>obtain a machine<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that allows for cost-effective, large-scale whole-genome sequencing. The\u00a0Phoenix Women&#8217;s Board of the Steele Children&#8217;s Research Center, affectionately known as PANDA (People Acting Now Discover Answers), raised the funds to purchase the new sequencer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That same year, a $10 million gift from the Steele Foundation was made to establish the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.arizona.edu\/pediatrics\/research\/cracchiolo-institute\"><b>Daniel Cracchiolo Institute for Pediatric Autoimmune Disease Research<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and provide financial support for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and faculty members. Of the gift,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthsciences.arizona.edu\/news\/stories\/lasting-legacy-take-care-children\"><b>$2 million was designated<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0for the Center for Advanced Molecular and Immunological Therapies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Emens family and others, these advancements in research and technology mean a future filled with hope that precision medicine will bring better, faster and personalized diagnoses and treatments for all autoimmune conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKnowing that other families might not have to endure what we did is comforting,\u201d Jamee said.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jamee Emens, the mother of triplets, remembers the sleepless nights all too well.
